What is the history of the equal rights amendment?

What is a brief history of the equal rights amendment for women in the United States. I just don't understand what happened to it when it went to the House. Did it get denied or passed?

the Equal Rights Amendment was a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution which was intended to guarantee that equal rights under any federal, state or local law could not be denied on account of sex. the ERA failed to gain ratification before its deadline and although it has been reintroduced in every Congress since 1982, public attention to it has greatly diminished.
