Female Hairy Woodpecker (Picoides villosus) bringing food to it's young.
Today we saw a chick sticking it's head out of the nest, and the female adult seemed to be trying to lure it out with the food, because it did not take the food directly in to the nest hole. It did a lot of calling and hanging around just outside the hole. Three days later, there was no activity around the nest, so I assume that the chicks had fledged and dispersed with their parents.
The hole seen in this image is not the nest hole.

As opposed to cute chick (I see, now, where the expression "bald as a coot" originated.
The mother was feeding her baby but I didn't manage to capture any food exchange.
I was manually focussing the Tamron 70-300mm lens and just wasn't quick enough.
