It is generally thought that Mexicans were the only workers recruited by Santa Fe, but it isn't so. Prior to the Mexican worker migration, other workers from Germany, Greece, Japan and Australia worked in Newton. They came from the Kansas City area and other large cities.

The original European workers left their work on the Santa Fe, either going into farming or working in the other industries, leaving a great demand for imported workers. The Kansan reported that as early as 1903, Mexican workers were being recruited at border towns like El Paso, Laredo and Nogales. Mexicans would go to a recruiting station, sign up for work and wait for shipment to various places the Santa Fe and other railroads needed laborers, or "trabajadores," to do their work.
